The night
Sleep is where the rhythm is built.
Testosterone rises after sleep begins and is generally elevated toward waking. Sleep restriction has been associated in research with lower daytime testosterone in healthy men, though the size of the effect varies between studies and between individuals.
The point is not that one bad night undoes anything. It is that sleep belongs in the testosterone conversation — and it is the part of it you can act on tonight.

Load, stress and recovery share the same picture.
Cortisol normally rises around waking and falls through the day. Work stress, training load and sleep debt all interact with that rhythm, which is why they can't be separated from the hormonal conversation.
Training is the same story in miniature: the session is the stimulus, but the adaptation is paid for in recovery. Chronically poor recovery interferes with sleep, and interfered-with sleep feeds back into the next morning.
Cortisol and testosterone are not mirror images of each other, and a single elevated evening reading does not describe a hormonal outcome.
The terms
Total, free, and why timing changes the answer.
Four words do most of the work in any testosterone conversation. Here they are in plain language, because a number you can't interpret isn't information.
Total testosterone
Everything circulating in your blood, bound and unbound together. It's the number most tests report first, and the one most affected by when the sample was taken.
Free testosterone
The small fraction not bound to a carrier protein — typically a couple of per cent of the total. Because it is unbound, it is the fraction usually discussed in relation to activity in tissue.
SHBG
Sex hormone-binding globulin: the carrier protein testosterone travels on. When SHBG is higher, more testosterone is bound and less is free — which is how two men with the same total can differ.
Timing
Because levels change across the day, the clock matters as much as the assay. Morning sampling is standard practice for exactly that reason, and an afternoon reading is not comparable to a morning one.
Age
Average levels decline gradually across adult life — slowly, over years, not abruptly. Sleep, body composition, training and stress load all sit alongside age in the same picture.
